Drug Interactions: Antidepressants & Caffeine

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that affects the central nervous system leading to increased alertness and reduced fatigue. Many people rely on caffeine to kick-start their day or to power through demanding tasks, and it’s readily available in various forms, from coffee and tea to energy drinks and supplements.

Antidepressants, which are aimed to alleviate symptoms of depression, are needed daily to reach the therapeutic levels. As a result, the combination of these two substances can potentially lead to interactions that need careful consideration.

Understanding the potential interactions and taking proactive steps to manage them can contribute to a healthier and more balanced approach.

Let’s begin by answering this question first:

Q: Caffeine is primarily metabolized by which pathway?

Answer: CYP1A2

  • Caffeine is primarily (~95%) metabolized by Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2)
