Journal Club 14: Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Antipsychotics for Acute Schizophrenia

Psychiatry Education Forum Academy is excited to release our next journal club discussion today. This journal club will focus on this clinically relevant topic of dose-response meta-analysis of antipsychotics for acute schizophrenia.

Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Antipsychotics for Acute Schizophrenia

Am J Psychiatry. 2020 Apr 1;177(4):342-353. PMID: 31838873.

This 45 min video discussion will attempt to answer the following questions:

  1. Why was this meta-analysis conducted?
  2. Impact of animal studies on the antipsychotics licensed doses ranges.
  3. Identify the maximum effective dose for each antipsychotic medication.
  4. Can the current approved licensed doses for antipsychotics be higher or lower than the maximum effective doses?
  5. Which antipsychotics may not show efficacy with an increase in doses?
  6. Which antipsychotics may show more efficacy with an increase in doses?
  7. What is the likely reason for the reduction in certain medications’ efficacy with an increase in doses?
  8. Learning the risperidone, olanzapine, and haloperidol equivalences for each antipsychotic medication.

Here is one of the slides explaining the important dosing information for Risperidone in terms of:

  • Number of studies examined
  • Dose range examined.
  • ED95 dose
  • Risperidone 1 mg equivalents
  • Olanzapine 1 mg equivalents
  • Haloperidol 1 mg equivalents
  • Dose-response graph curve

Psychiatry Education Forum’s Journal Club is an additional feature for our Academy’s members. We are excited to announce the release of our new feature in the journal club:

ABPN’S Article Based Continuing Certification (ABCC) Pathway Track

This new Article Based Continuing Certification (ABCC) Pathway is an ongoing professional journal article-based assessment activity designed by ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) for physicians to meet their Continuing Certification program requirement.

In our upcoming journal club discussions, we will discuss 1-2 articles per month from this ABCC track in a clinically relevant fashion. This will help you answer the multiple-choice questions on ABPN’s website to get the credits for each article discussion.
