Sulforaphane for Negative Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Negative symptoms of schizophrenia—such as blunted affect, avolition, and social withdrawal—are often resistant to standard antipsychotic treatment and remain a major unmet clinical need.

Recent research has explored sulforaphane (SFN), a compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli sprouts, as a potential adjunctive therapy. Through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and epigenetic effects, SFN may improve specific negative symptoms without affecting positive symptoms or global functioning.

A 24-week randomized controlled trial demonstrated significant improvements in emotional withdrawal and blunted affect.
