Geriatric Psychiatry Update: Sedentary Behavior & Dementia Risk
According to this retrospective study published in JAMA Psychiatry on Sep 12, 2023: “Among older adults, more time spent in sedentary behaviors was significantly associated with higher incidence of all-cause dementia”.
DEFINITION: Sedentary behavior bouts were defined as:
- > 2 consecutive 30-second epochs classified as waking sedentary behaviors
- sleep was not included in sedentary behavior time.
DEMENTIA DIAGNOSIS:
- Inpatient hospital records and death registry data were used to determine incident all-cause dementia diagnoses.
RESULTS:
- Nonlinear relationship between mean daily sedentary behavior time and incident dementia.
- Risks increasing after ~10 hours per day.
This study signifies the importance of not ignoring this reversible risk factor and promoting physical activity among older adults.
