Duration of Antipsychotic use after Mania Remission.

25 year old female with history of bipolar disorder is admitted to inpatient psychiatry unit for acute manic episode. She was stabilized on a combination of lithium and risperidone.

Q: What is an optimal duration of antipsychotic use in this patient with bipolar disorder following remission of manic episode?

Before proceeding further: Submit your answer first

ANSWER: (c) 6 MONTHS

(a) Continuing antipsychotics beyond 6 months (24 weeks) may not further protect against mania recurrence and definitely causes more weight gain.

(b) The adjunctive atypical antipsychotic treatment beyond 6 months (24 weeks) confers additional adverse event burden without necessarily offering definitive tangible clinical benefit in efficacy.
